Junior high school

Lower secondary school covers grades seven, eight, and nine, children between the ages of roughly 12 and 15, with increased focus on academic studies.

Like elementary schools, most junior high schools in the 1980s were public, but 5% were private. Private schools were costly, averaging 558,592 yen (US$3,989) per student in 1988, about four times more than the 130,828 yen (US$934) that the ministry estimated as the cost for students enrolled in public junior high school. Teachers often majored in the subjects they taught, and more than 80% graduated from a four-year college. Classes are large, with thirty-eight students per class on average, and each class is assigned a homeroom teacher who doubles as counselor. Unlike elementary students, junior high school students have different teachers for different subjects. The teacher, however, rather than the students, moves to a new room for each fifty or forty-five minute period.

Instruction in junior high schools tends to rely on the lecture method. Teachers also use other media, such as television and radio, and there is some laboratory work. By 1989 about 45% of all public junior high schools had computers, including schools that used them only for administrative purposes. Classroom organization is still based on small work groups of four to six students, although no longer for reasons of discipline.

All course contents are specified in the Course of Study for Lower-Secondary Schools. Some subjects, such as Japanese language and mathematics, are coordinated with the elementary curriculum. Others, such as foreign-language study, begin at this level, though from April 2011 English will become a compulsory part of the elementary school curriculum. The junior school curriculum covers Japanese language, social studies, mathematics, science, music, fine arts, health, and physical education. All students are also exposed to industrial arts and homemaking. Moral education and special activities continue to receive attention. Most students also participate in one of a range of school clubs that occupy them until around 6pm most weekdays (including weekends and often before school as well), as part of an effort to address juvenile delinquency.

A growing number of junior high school students also attend juku, private extracurricular study schools, in the evenings and on weekends. A focus by students upon these other studies and the increasingly structured demands upon students' time have been criticized by teachers and in the media for contributing to a decline in classroom standards and student performance in recent years.

The ministry recognizes a need to improve the teaching of all foreign languages, especially English. To improve instruction in spoken English, the government invites many young native speakers of English to Japan to serve as assistants to school boards and prefectures under its Japan Exchange and Teaching Program. Beginning with 848 participants in 1987, the program grew to a high of 6,273 participants in 2002. However, the program has been on the decline in recent years due to several factors, including shrinking local school budgets funding the program, as well as an increasing number of school boards hiring their foreign native speakers directly or through lower-paying, private agencies.

High school

Even though upper-secondary school is not compulsory in Japan, 94% of all junior high school graduates entered high schools as of 2005. Private upper-secondary schools account for about 55% of all upper-secondary schools, and neither public nor private schools are free. The Ministry of Education estimated that annual family expenses for the education of a child in a public upper-secondary school were about 300,000 yen (US$2,142) in the 1980s and that private upper-secondary schools were about twice as expensive.

The most common type of upper-secondary school has a full-time, general program that offered academic courses for students preparing for higher education as well as technical and vocational courses for students expecting to find employment after graduation. More than 70% of upper-secondary school students were enrolled in the general academic program in the late 1980s. A small number of schools offer part-time programs, evening courses, or correspondence education.

The first-year programs for students in both academic and commercial courses are similar. They include basic academic courses, such as Japanese language, English, mathematics, and science. In upper-secondary school, differences in ability are first publicly acknowledged, and course content and course selection are far more individualized in the second year. However, there is a core of academic material throughout all programs.

Vocational-technical programs includes several hundred specialized courses, such as information processing, navigation, fish farming, business English, and ceramics. Business and industrial courses are the most popular, accounting for 72% of all students in full-time vocational programs in 1989.

Universities and colleges

According to The Times Higher Education Supplement and École des Mines de Paris, the top-ranking universities in Japan are the University of Tokyo, Kyoto University, Keio University and Waseda University.
The QS Asia University Rankings Top 20 included University of Tokyo at 5th position, Osaka University at 7th, Kyoto University at 8th, Tohoku University at 9th, Nagoya University at 10th, Tokyo Institute of Technology at 11th, Kyushu University at 17th and University of Tsukuba at 20th.

Paragraph Structure Exercise: Using P.I.E.

A basic way to structure a paragraph is to use the P.I.E. method: Point, Illustration, Explanation.

* The Point is the main idea of the paragraph, to which everything in the paragraph relates.
* The Illustration is the specific fact or example that supports (illustrates) the Point. It will always be specific (a particular fact) and usually concrete (a physical detail, a quote, names, numbers, etc.).
* The Explanation shows (explains) two things:
o how or why the Illustration supports the Point, and
o how or why the Point supports the controlling idea of the essay as a whole.

The Explanation almost always works by repeating, re-phrasing or referring to the other two elements of the paragraph, putting them together into a single statement, joined with abstract or content-independent analytical terms. For example, “The splinter [Illustration] is a small example showing that [abstract analysis] the narrator is willing to suffer for what he believes in [Point].”

In order to use this method effectively, it’s important to be able to tell the difference between Point, Illustration and Explanation. Looking at the example paragraphs below, label each part of the paragraph (individual sentences or even parts of sentences) with a P, an I or an E to indicate whether they are Point, Illustration or Explanation.

These paragraphs are taken from an essay discussing the theme of stories, especially neglected stories, in “The Barn and the Bees.”

The essay opens with the author in a car full of manure, which suggests its own story. He sees a crudely worded, ungrammatical sign with an arrow drawn in red crayon; these details imply a story about the person who made it, while the sign itself promises a story behind the lumber it advertises. The author’s investigation of the ruin is its own story, but the ruin also promises a story, or many: Who built it? Why is it ruined? Why are these things here (a wagon, a boat)? What about those bees? Finally, the author’s conversation with the owner tells the story of their negotiation, coming to an agreement about what to do with the barn, but also reveals a little more of the story of the barn itself, why it’s down but not out.

The main part comprises four subsections: Capturing the bees, visitors, an interlude, and more visitors. Again, each subsection tells multiple stories. There is the story of the bees themselves—where they built, what they are doing, how they respond to the collapse and then the capture of their hive. Stafford’s description evokes the theme: the bees have a “city compact with purpose in a neglected place” (178). Each visitor brings a story—the boys who want a tree house, the man who called the barn an “eyesore,” the woman who wished it could have stayed, and so on. The interlude tells us that so many stories call for rest: “I had to stop, I had to walk away from it, ... to walk again and rest from the persistent unity of the ruin” (181). The author naps, and when he wakes he finds “a shape of my own dwelling in the grass” (182): even so transient a “dwelling” as a nap in a meadow leaves a “shape” like the barn, a story.

These are two sample paragraphs revised to show how the information in a paragraph can be arranged in different ways.

The revisions are not necessarily better, but they reveal two essential things:
1. You can present ideas in all sorts of different ways. Just because they came out one way when you first wrote them does not mean that they have to stay that way.
2. The arrangement of ideas can create a pattern, which can improve both understanding and appreciation, even when the reader is not consciously aware of the pattern.

The samples come from a paper analyzing Kim Stafford’s essay, “The Barn and the Bees” (from Having Everything Right, Confluence Press, 1986).

1. Put at least three examples from the essay (illustrating the point of that paragraph) at the beginning of the paragraph, and at least two different examples at the end. In the middle, put an explanation that states the point of the paragraph and shows how/why the examples support the point.

Paragraph Outline Example

This is a paragraph outline of the persuasive article “Toxic Soup Redux: Why Environmental Racism and Environmental Justice Matter after Katrina,” by Julie Sze. The main purpose of the example is to show you what a paragraph outline might look like. You don’t have to read the article to get the point, but if you want to it’s only 10 paragraphs, 1742 words, about 2 pages (3 with footnotes).

This is one way of doing the outline. There are others. It’s not so important that your outline look just like this one. (And note that it’s for you; abbreviations are fine as long as you will remember what they mean.) What is important is that you get the basic information. This includes all the main ideas in the article, and the hierarchy of ideas (what’s the single overall idea, which are main ideas and which are supporting ideas).
First read the article

Before trying to do any of the steps below, you should read the article through at least once for basic understanding. Then go back and review, following these steps.

TwT Almost this world knew 'bout tsunami happen in japan yesterday
so shocked when hear about that at 4 pm (in indo)~

but when I'm home ... i just stared on TV ..OMG~~ O...Oa
i run to my room... switch on my laptop..

actually on yesetrday..
we had some cosplay event or J-Matsuri at my collage
ureshii na <3 but i cos alois just 1 hour *cried* =_=
i don't took some photo when cos be him T-T *cried again*
after that..i changed be lady ciel to accompany alois girl =_=
but poor me.. she changed be allen walker ..hahahaha
then i'm alone waiting my sebastian who came TOO LATE =_= *throw heel*
but i'm so happy in there ..

i just stared at sebby "i don't want to go~~" but "hey. it's alright come on bocchan".. =__=

"HEY..come with meh la~~ you're scared..me too"~~ then ..we entered some..um dunno what is that..
i just can saw a dark place.. thane i heard 'kressek~~~'..i screamed a lot..then alois too =_='.. we're scream together *looks so weird la XD*
Then something grabbed alois foot..he scream..i looked at back... then sebby hug me.. *he looked be butler @ there ..LOL

this is summary of this episode => from NAYAMA

Hannah wants to change Alois' bandage but he tells her to call Claude. When Claude arrives he comments that in the end Ciel didn't stab him so hard. Claude says that if Ciel had been calmer he would've been able to stab him deeper and Alois asks him if he wants him dead, considering his comment. Claude replies he was just thinking that the wound looks so "clumsy and pure..." (he says this in a kinda uhh raptured way?) and Alois gets angry (because he notices the raptured way lol). He asks him if his blood smells good and if he wants to devour it. Claude replies yes, smiling, then he leaves the room and Alois is left feeling disturbed because he smiled. OP. Hmm the very beginning is different from the first version I think? Didn't check tho. Title is "toro shitsuji", which means "confessing/revealing/disclosing butler" (lol sorry I still haven't decided which one I like the most and think is the most fit version). Alois goes up to Hannah in a corridor and jumps on her. Crying, he asks her to take him to Ciel's place. Claude in the meanwhile is doing weird stuff... The triplets whisper something to him, maybe that Alois has left the house. Alois is in a carriage driven by Hannah. He remembers of the when he was little. He (I'm calling him Alois but he'd actually be "Jim") and his "brother" (not sure if they are real brothers or not, but Luka calls him "brother") Luka steal some stuff from a guy. Luka is worried that if one of the things they stole is medicine the guy might die but Alois doesn't care. He gets angry because someone threw a rock at Luka. He is apparently mad at the people from the village that (as he says) started to treat them coldly after their parents died, and he wishes they'd all die. Luka says his wish will definitely become true because he's so cool. He also calls him "your highness" (probably as a joke). One night they see corpses streaming down the river and the village is burning. They seem very happy that all the people living there died. Alois suggests that they go to the village to steal the dead's belongings. Luka agrees (but makes a strange face for some reason). Alois loses sight of Luka. When he finds it again it's like the flashback from episode 1: he finds him dead and screams "don't leave me alone". An older Alois is taken to the Trancy residence together with many other young boys. Some guys comment that the Queen's Spider sucks its preys' purity to the last drop. Lord Trancy examines the boys. He says Alois' eyes look dirty and he hits him. The boys are being washed somewhere in the house (looks like the basement). One boy is talking to another one about fairies that make your wishes come true, but the other one doesn't believe him. Alois' asks him how you summon a fairy. As written in Black Tabloid, you have to find a spiderweb with morning dew on it and put it on your face like a veil, then you say the summoning words "hoheotararuna ronderotareru" (no, we still don't know what language this is and it's very likely just gibberish they invented FYI). Alois is trapped in a big spiderweb and a big spider asks him what his wish is, but he doesn't really answer. The spider (who of course has Claude's voice) is surprised that he doesn't have a wish and he asks if there is someone he's holding a grudge against, but the villagers Alois used to hate are all dead, and he realizes that even if he escapes the old pervert's house he would have no place to go back to anyway. The spider asks him again but he still doesn't asnwer, so he lets him go and tells him that when he can think of a wish they will make a contract. Alois asks him if he's a fairy, but he only answers "demon".

Alois says that he had never had a reason to live, but now he has one: to decide what to wish. Lord Trancy is having a bath, he's angry because "another doll broke". (I need to thank the bath foam, ugh). Apparently some boys are dying from illnesses, so he complains that the dolls are too weak and they should shower them in disinfectants. He's also angry because they prepared Jim for him, and he doesn't like Jim because he finds him dirty. However, Alois/Jim enters the room dressed in a kimono (with a spiderweb and butterflies on it btw) and Lord Trancy seem to change his mind instantly... Alois tells him "sorry for making you wait, my beloved father". Alois and Claude are sitting at a table, talking. I figure Claude is not his butler yet, so he passed off as someone else to enter the mansion (dunno, he pretended to be some noble guy or whatever I guess). Claude names Sebastian Michaelis, another demon. He says that he destroyed Alois' village because of a contract with a certain person, and that person (whose identity is not revealed) is now in his belly. Alois is angry because this means that Sebastian was the one who killed Luka. Claude names Ciel Phantomhive, saying Sebastian currently has a contract with him and is also abnormaly attached to his soul, in a way that is very unusual for demons. Alois makes the contract with Claude, asking him to bring Ciel to him. We see Alois crying over Lord Trancy's coffin in a church and "his" uncle looking not pleased. When they're walking alone in the graveyard Claude tells him he freed all the other boys and made the arrangements so that he could inherit Lord Trancy's estate. Alois seems more interested in Ciel though. Claude asks him why he requested to have Ciel and not to kill Sebastian. Alois says that killing him would not be enough, he wants to give him a pain stronger than death. That's why he wants to steal from him what is currently most precious to him: Ciel. Claude seems pleased by the answer. Alois says that Ciel will be his, and Claude is his too. Back to the present. Alois' carriage skids to a halt. Grell appears. He says Alois' real name is Jim Machen and he wants to end things quickly because he's not interested in kids. He also says that actually his soul's situation is weird... Hannah arrives to stop Grell and they start fighting. Grell recognizes she is a demon right away. Alois is crawling on the ground. More flashbacks. During breakfast he gets angry at Claude and complains that he's just a demon like Seb, then when Claude says "yes your highness" he yells him not to say that. After Claude and the triplets leave the room Alois remembers Luka saying "yes your highness" and this time yells (to Claude) "no, say it!". In another flashback he slaps Claude, asking him why he always does every single thing Alois says. Claude answers that he wants to devour him, "just that". Present Alois comments: "Then look at me with those eyes. Not the eyes of someone who's sick looking at me like the villagers'. Not the eyes filled with lust like that old man's. The eyes you had that day, when you were looking at me, only me..." We see an image of Claude saying: "Calm into passion, hesitation into resolution, love into a headstone". Alois says: "I know that he's only hungry and that my feelings are just making my soul's taste more impure. But I..." A hungry-looking wild dog gets close to Alois. In the meawhile, Grell pierces Hannah with his death scythe. Before the dog can jump on Alois Claude arrives, asking him "what are you trying to do, master? You still haven't caught Ciel Phantomhive". Alois tells him Claude is the only person he has left. Claude is not impressed, but Alois keeps on saying he's the only one left in his world. He hugs his leg and tells him not to leave his side, no matter what. Then he tells him "you are my highness". Claude kneels before him and cups his face in his hands, saying "Such words for a mere butler...". Then we see blood pouring on Alois' legs and he drops to the ground.

Claude says: "Do not worry, my master. I cannot possibly get hungry looking at a low class soul that offers his love to a mere butler. I will keep you by my side." And he puts Alois' ring in his pocket. "Your soul will be useful." Grell comes out and says that Alois was actually supposed to die that night, but if a demon is involved then it's no wonder that things went differently. He doesn't want to steal the soul though, because actually it didn't figure as something he needed to retrieve, but he says he's interested in seeing how things develop. Claude asks him if he's Sebastian's ally, but Grell answers that being an ally would be too cliché and "love is fighting". ED. New ED using Kalafina's song "Kagayaku Sora no Shijima ni wa" ("in the silence of the shining sky"). After the ED we see Hannah standing and we hear Luka's voice saying "your wish will definitely come true". She lies on Alois and says "Master, your wish will.." while doing something to his face/eye with her hand. Nothing much to say about the preview, but yeah, it kinda looks like Ciel is "possessed" by Alois while wearing his ring...
